BCom Hons Statistics

The Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) degree in Statistics.

Honours students are required to complete four coursework modules to the value of 70% for the Honours degree and complete a research project to the value of 30%. The multivariate analysis and generalized linear model modules are compulsory. Subject to staff availability, students are allowed to choose two modules from various courses, for example from econometrics, sampling methods, risk theory, stochastic calculus in finance, stochastic process etc. Not all courses are offered each year. The research project includes an oral presentation to the staff and postgraduate students in the Department of Statistics.

At the discretion of the Head of Department of Statistics, a student may include modules from Pure or Applied Mathematics, Economics, Computer Science or any other approved subject.

Applicants are required to have an undergraduate degree NQF level 7 in Mathematical Statistics.

In addition, all applicants will be evaluated based on their academic record and undergraduate curriculum. In particular students are required to attain at least 65% on average, where no module or component is less than 60%, in their undergraduate third year Mathematical Statistics course(s).
