Nkateko Baloyi – Global Markets Business Technology Graduate

What degree did you study at university?

MSc e-Science (Data Science), University of the Witwatersrand

What is your role at RMB?

Global Markets Business Technology Graduate

Can you tell us why you chose this career?

There’s a vast amount of data generated daily in the markets, and this gives me the opportunity to apply the skills I have acquired over the years while learning new skills.

The markets are volatile, and nothing is really certain with the markets which poses new challenges that will eventually help you grow in your career.  You can never be too comfortable in your role as you don’t get stuck in a repetitive routine.

What’s a typical day like in your job?

My typical day starts at around 8 am. I check my emails, read the news and then catch up with social media pages to keep up to date with what’s happening in the field. As a graduate, my role involves me rotating to different teams in global Markets, currently I’m with the Market Data Dev team.  I normally have meetings from 10 am -12 pm, but sometimes my meetings start earlier. I switch into the work project at around 12pm and I finish at around 6 pm or later, depending on the progress I’ve made on the project. Typically, I spend about 30% of the time reading and researching about the project before implementing or developing applications.

What are the some of the highlights and challenges of your role?

I’ve learnt to manage my time and pick up my pace when working on scheduled projects. One of the biggest highlights in my role now is contributing to the development of a new product.

I often have about 3 meetings between 10 am and 12 pm, and it’s still a challenge for me to “just” switch back to my work project after the meetings.

How do you keep up to date with all the changes in your profession?

I follow social media accounts and blogs related to my field of work. I also take time to participate in competitions and conferences.

What do you enjoy doing for fun outside of the office?

I spend most of the time indoors reading fiction books and cooking. For outdoor activities, I enjoy hiking.
