Marguerite Lamey – Sanlam Data Academy Trainee

What degree did you study at university?

BSc Hons Actuarial Science, University of Pretoria

What is your role at Sanlam?

I am a Data and Digital Academy Trainee on the Data Track

Can you tell us why you chose this career?

I enjoyed the Mathematical Statistics subjects during my Actuarial studies very much, and I knew I wanted to become more skilled at data analytics. Combining my actuarial background with analytics means that I can apply the ideal combination of quantitative skills, effective communication and creativity to make a positive difference.

What’s a typical day like in your job?

The typical Friday (Academy Day) involves attending a full-day interactive lecture where new skills and theory are taught, broken down into modules throughout the year.

My typical Monday to Thursday entails applying these skills in the rotation where I was placed based on my academic background. These workdays will usually involve data analysis, data modelling and team meetings.

What are the some of the highlights and challenges of your role?

Highlights:

• We work with incredibly clever and driven people.
• The skills training is hands-on and is directly applicable to business needs.

• We also have an unparalleled support structure of mentors, buddies and coaches to help us reach our goals.

Challenges

• The adjustment to remote working.
• Becoming fluent in the jargon used.

How do you keep up to date with all the changes in your profession?

I like to read The Actuary Magazine and data science articles on Medium to keep up to date. Whenever I come across new or unfamiliar concepts or ideas in my workload, I will research them online.

What do you enjoy doing for fun outside of the office?

Coming from Gauteng, I really enjoy going for hikes and walks in all the many beautiful areas Cape Town and the surrounding towns have to offer! I also like watercolour painting, trying out new recipes and spending time with/video calling friends and family.
