I have a Masters degree in Business Mathematics and Informatics (BMI) with specialisation in Quantitative Risk Management, which I completed at North-West University in Potchefstroom.
What is your role at Capitec ?
I am a Data Scientist in the Credit Management department, developing and monitoring credit behaviour models primarily.
Why did you choose this career?
I enjoyed math in high school and wanted to pursue a career that is in high demand to ensure a stable income and continuous growth opportunities.
What does your typical day entail?
My day usually starts with a cup of coffee, followed by checking my emails and calendar to plan the day. Programming and data analyses or model development is a normal part of my day, and I often present findings to stakeholders or discuss possible solutions to problems with peers.
What are the highlights and challenges of your role?
The highlight for me is that it is challenging. It requires proper planning because deadlines can be tight, which I enjoy. We face many different kinds of problems to solve, which can be tricky but keeps it interesting.
How do you keep up to date with all the changes in your field of work?
If I can be honest, I don’t think I do. It feels like the field of work is ever-changing, which is a good thing. The area keeps progressing and growing. I try not to get too far behind by checking in with peers, reading up on specific subjects or enrolling in relevant courses to ensure personal development.
What do you enjoy doing outside of the office?
I love to read, exploring the Cape Winelands, sushi dates and quality time with friends and family.
