Dinah Desai – Quantitative Analyst Trainee

What degree did you study at university?

Honours degree in Computational and Applied Mathematics at Wits University.

What is your role at Nedbank?

I am a Quantitative Analyst Trainee, currently doing my rotation in CIB: Models.

Can you tell us why you chose this career?

I am analytical and love to be challenged. In this field, one is always forced to think outside of the box. I am passionate about maths, statistics, trends and patterns and being a Quant enables me to enjoy going to work every day!

What’s a typical day like in your job?

I first review my emails and calendar to plan my day. I then attend a few meetings and collaborate with my team, but the majority of my day is spent analysing, processing and modelling data in SAS, Excel and SQL.

What are the some of the highlights and challenges of your role?

It is extremely rewarding when you can associate real life problems with numbers and data. I love analysing data, performing various types of calculations and contributing to the delivery of a project. Everything new is a challenge, but it’s exciting because I want to continuously learn and enhance my skills and knowledge. It feels great to overcome these challenges and prove to yourself that you can do it!

How do you keep up to date with all the changes in your profession?

My first point of contact for information is my email, and that is why it’s the first thing I catch up on in the morning. I also sit right next to my manager, she and I talk throughout the day on what is currently happening in the department so that I stay in the loop. Nedbank also has a page where you can see what’s happening in and around the bank, it may not be related to my rotation but it’s nice to know what I can involve myself in.

What do you enjoy doing for fun outside of the office?

I love being out with family and friends. In addition, I have a huge appreciation for nature, I enjoy hiking and picnics. One of my other passions is cooking, so I tend to spend a lot of time in the kitchen. While relaxing at home, I enjoy keeping up with the latest fashion trends on social media.
