Andrea Pearse – Quantitative Analyst Trainee

What degree did you study at university?

BSc Mechanical Engineering and MCom in Risk Management of Financial Markets at the University of Cape Town.

What is your role at Nedbank?

I am a Quantitative Analyst trainee currently working in CIB Market Risk.

Can you tell us why you chose this career?

I enjoyed the quantitative side of my university courses, including maths and coding, and found the financial sector an extremely interesting one due to its importance within our economy.

What’s a typical day like in your job?

My regular day within my current rotation includes reporting on the risk that certain trading desks hold and monitoring this risk. In the market risk space, you are faced with different, challenging tasks every day.

What are the some of the highlights and challenges of your role?

The highlight of my role is that I am constantly learning and evolving within my career. Although due to rotating through the grad programme, the challenge is to be agile in your work approach in order to succeed in all the different areas in which you are placed.

How do you keep up to date with all the changes in your profession?

To keep up to date you need to constantly read up on content and do courses on aspects within your field to ensure that you are aware of and learning about changes that occur.

What do you enjoy doing for fun outside of the office?

I enjoy running and doing yoga as well as spending time with friends and family.
